- Do You Need Flood or Earthquake Insurance?
We'd like to believe that disasters caused by floods or earthquakes are rare. But as we have seen with the recent natural disasters in the United States and abroad, the impact can be financially devastating. If you were to fall victim to a natural disaster, could you pay for the damages out-of-pocket? Will your homeowners insurance provide adequate coverage? Could any of us depend on the government for assistance? Standard homeowners insurance generally does not cover damage directly caused by either floods or earthquakes.
- Insuring a Teenage Driver
When should you add your teenager to your auto insurance policy? Some insurance companies want you to add your teen when he or she earns a learner's permit, and will charge a nominal or reduced fee on your premium. Most companies require that teens be added when they get their driver's licenses--and it won't be cheap to insure your newly licensed, high-risk teenage driver. If your car is an expensive one, you might consider buying an older car and insuring it in your teen's name on an individual policy.
- Insuring Your Boat
Your homeowners insurance policy may provide a small amount of physical damage coverage for a small boat that's stored at your home, and it may offer some coverage against personal liability. But for additional coverage, you'll have to buy boat insurance, which your state may require. A boat policy covers physical damage and liability claims. The cost of boat insurance depends on many factors, but tends to be more expensive for larger and more powerful boats.
- Insuring Your Home Business
Don't count on your homeowners insurance to cover your at-home business. Such coverage is limited, though it may allow an endorsement to an existing policy. Instead, look for a business owners policy or a home office policy, which is a combination of a homeowners and business owners policy. You'll need auto insurance if you use your car for business, workers' compensation insurance for even one employee, and adequate life insurance. Disability insurance is equally important. It's a good idea to get help from a licensed insurance professional.
